3.RESEARCH INTERESTS

•Medical Geology:

In 2013, I shifted my research focus to the development of Medical Geology, concentrating on Africa. The main objective is to understand the impact of the geo-environment on the health of animals and communities, particularly in rural areas, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). My research primarily involves training postgraduate students from various African countries.

•Hard-Rock Geology (1990-2016): Metamorphic geology and petrogenesis of high to ultra-high grade metamorphic rocks, radiogenic isotope geology (Sm-Nd and U-Pb methods), mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry are the main areas of focus. The projects I have contributed to so far were on the Hoggar in Algeria; Limpopo and Namaqualand Belts, South Africa; Congo craton; Svecofennian Orogeny, Finland, and the Eastern Ghat Belt (EGB), India.

4.SUPERVISION OF POSTDOCS AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

I was involved in supervising/co-supervising over 40 Postgraduate students and Postdoctoral Associates, most of whom are in Medical Geology and from African countries, including South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Namibia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameron.

8. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES ORGANISED (3 main events since 2011)

2011: 23rdCONGRESS ON AFRICAN GEOLOGY (CAG23) University of Johannesburg January 2011 (www. cag23.co.za/)

This event was organized for the first time in South Africa after winning the bid presented at CAG22, held in Tunisia in 2008. The total number of delegates who attended CAG23 at the University of Johannesburg was 503, representing 58 countries worldwide at the same level in terms of size and success as CAG14 and CAG15, which were held in Germany and France, respectively. CAG23 is the largest event organized on the African continent since it was launched in 1964.

The number of participants and countries that CAG23 brought together, all the issues that were discussed, and the successful outcomes of the sessions/workshops/business meetings that took place during this event are all in line with the theme of the event, “together in Africa for a Leading Role in Geoscience.”

The important financial contribution enabled CAG23 to provide support in various forms (registration fees/accommodation/air tickets) to up to 217 delegates, including 82 students and young scientists from Africa and 135 academics (plenary/keynote/invited speakers) from various countries, representing nearly 43% of the total number of the delegates.

Besides chairing the event, I oversaw the fundraising portfolio. The event was sponsored by 16 national (industry and governmental offices) and 14 international organisations sponsors and generated a total income of ≈ 2 million Rands.

Legacy: Development of the Medical Geology in Africa

•2014: I initiated the organization of the 1st International Symposium on Medical Geology in Africa (ISMGAf)- The 1st event in Africa/South Africa took place at the University of Johannesburg, March 2014. The total number of delegates was 66 (30 were postgraduate students). The event was sponsored by 5 organisations (2 National and 3 international).

•2018: organization of the 2nd International Symposium on Medical Geology in Africa (ISMGAf)- at the University of Johannesburg. The total number of delegates was 70 (40 were postgraduate students) representing several institutions in SA. The event was sponsored by 5 organisations (2 National and 3 International).

13. LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

In addition to the significant leadership role I played in organizing the three major international events mentioned above, in 2013, I was nominated and elected by the University of Johannesburg Members of the Executive Committee to participate in the Vice-Chancellor Executive Leadership Group Development Program. This program, offered by the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), was designed to enhance and develop the leadership capacities of the University of Johannesburg executives. It included workshops on leadership and management presented by experts in these fields, followed by visits to key universities in Singapore and Shanghai, where local experts delivered lectures on leadership and management. As part of the training, the Vice-Chancellor assigned participants projects on specific themes related to the University of Johannesburg's long-term plan. These projects were evaluated and presented before the University of Johannesburg Council in June 2014. The theme I worked on with five other Executive Leadership Group (ELG) members was the " Pan-African Initiative. " Since then, I have participated in several ELG workshops and discussion forums focusing on the University of Johannesburg’s vision and long-term plans, including the Global Reputation Conversation and the University of Johannesburg Brand Manifesto, phases 1 and 2.
