James P. McCalpin

James McCalpin received a B.A. degree in 1972 from the University of Texas, Austin; an M.S. degree in 1975 from the University of Colorado, Boulder; and a Ph.D degree in 1981 from the Colorado School of Mines. All were in Geology. Between his MS and PhD programs he worked for U.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Western Environmental Geology, in Menlo Park, California. After his PhD he worked as County Geologist for the Jefferson County Planning Department, Golden, Colorado. He then taught geomorphology and engineering geology for nine years at Utah State University, Logan, Utah.  Dr. McCalpin founded GEO-HAZ Consulting, Inc. in 1991and began working full-time as a consultant in geologic hazards (primarily seismic and slope stability). He has performed or directed work in >190 consulting projects, for clients representing US and foreign governments, for-profit and nonprofit companies, and individual landowners. In many projects he collaborated with client’s planners and engineers concerning project placement and mitigation design for existing and new infrastructure. Dr. McCalpin has provided technical and policy guidance to many agencies of the US Federal and State governments, including the Departments of the Interior, Justice, and Energy. He also consulted for numerous foreign national geological surveys, academies of science, universities, and national-level regulatory agencies. Dr. McCalpin has authored more than 160 refereed papers in scientific journals and proceedings; 13 published geologic maps; and >130 consulting reports on geohazards for clients.
